Kodungallur Bhagavathy, a fierce goddess Bhadrakali, known locally as Kodungallur Amma. Not new to my fellow Malayalees, Kodungallur Bhagavathy Temple, one of the oldest temples in Kerala, dates back to around the 1st century AD, making it over 2000 years old!
I make a point to visit this temple whenever I’m home, as it’s nearby. The temple is unique, with distinctive rituals and customs, some unpalatable too. Its history is linked to the ancient Chera dynasty and is even influenced by Kashmir Shaivism.
The goddess is depicted in her fierce form, facing north, with eight hands holding various items: the head of the demon king Daruka, a sickle-shaped sword, an anklet, a bell, among others. She wears earrings made of a lion and an elephant too!
Originally established by Parasurama, the temple later saw Adi Shankaracharya install Sri Chakras in the shrine, to which poojas are still performed today.
