The Dharma wheel, or Dharmachakra in Sanskrit (or Dhammachakka in Pali), is one of the oldest symbols of Buddhism. It is also one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of the religion.

An eight-spoke wheel is the most common form of the wheel in Buddhism, representing the eight-fold path.

A similar wheel/chakra symbol is one of the oldest in Indian history. The wheel symbol appears frequently on Indus Valley civilization artifacts, especially on some seals. As a symbol of the sun, it first appeared on the clay seals of the Indus civilization in 2500 BC. Such a wheel is also the main attribute of Lord Vishnu.

In the Vedas, Lord Surya is associated with the sun disc, which is said to be a one-wheeled chariot (chakra). Mitra, a type of Surya, is described as the ‘eye of the world’ and thus the sun is considered as the illuminating and perceiving eye (chakshu) of the world. Therefore, the wheel symbol may also be associated with light and knowledge.
