*Darpana Sundari*
Darpana Sundari transliterates to 'The beautiful lady holding a mirror', a popular sculpture on the temple wall of Beluru Chennakeshava in Karnataka.
There are numerous such figurines around the temple which are also called 'Shilabalikas' or 'Madanikas'. They are said to be ancient tree deities and are said to be the epitome of feminity.
You’ll also find several depictions of apsaras (or celestial nymphs) holding a mirror donning a “Tribhanga” stance, which means, roughly, "equipoised stance bent in three places.", a pose usually used in classical dance, especially Odissi.
This artwork is inspired by the iconic sculpture, which is so intricately done at the temple, I can’t even begin to explain. Do Google it if you get a chance. :) You’ll know what I am talking about.
